Black Wing Shooting Center hosts
the fourth annual “Break ‘Em All Open”
By: Dave Guinn
Delaware, OH – Black Wing Shooting Center (Black Wing) hosted the 4th annual Break ‘Em All Skeet Shoot Open, September 15 – 16, 2007. The Break ‘Em All Open continued the record setting pace at Black Wing this year nearly doubling the number of shooters from last year with a total of 39 shooters participating in 2007.
The Break ‘Em All Open presenter, John Beggs’ Dairy Queen Division, provided $1,000 in added money plus an additional $200 in Lewis class money to B class and lower shooters to make the final shoot of Black Wing’s 2007 registered skeet schedule a fun and very interesting shoot. Also, the Dairy Queen Division contributed a 20 gauge Tournament Skeet Remington 1100 to be awarded by random drawing. Dave Guinn contributed over $300 in additional door prizes which included a $75 Black Wing gift certificate and a flat of 12 gauge AA shells plus the Rusty Spur Restaurant contributed a Las Vegas vacation, 3 days & 2 nights (accommodations only) which included $500 in casino benefits.
The Break ‘EM All Open attracted shooters from all corners of Ohio and parts of West Virginia on a brisk September week-end. No rain, no wind, no baking hot temperatures and no excuses accepted this week-end. Our sponsor picked this September week-end to avoid the Texas-like hot-humid weather conditions which usually prevailed during previous Break ‘Em All Open shoots. However in case any shooter suffered from dehydration during the shoot, a first-aid freezer equipped with 240 DQ treats was available to treat the needy shooter. Nearly every treat was consumed during the shoot with just a few left over for consumption by our hard working referees.
Each event included a Lewis Class concurrent event which included all shooters B class and below. No fees were charged the shooters to participate. The shooters were divided into 3 groups which split $50 in additional prize money among the top scorers of each group. Congratulations to all the shooters who took home a little extra money with them and thank you John for conceiving and providing the money to fund all 4 Lewis class events.
The Doubles Event opened the shoot with Jim Rogers (a.k.a. Bryan Rogers’ dad) taking top honors. Class winners were: Mike Harm, AA-1, Bryan Rogers, A-1, Ted Latham, B-1, Tim Witzler, C-1 and Dan Hathaway, D-1.
The 12 GA Event followed with just one perfect score which was posted by Charlie Williams. Class winners were: Wayne Harvey, AA-1, Flint Gabelman, A-1, Paul Kautz, B-1, Mike Koehler, C-1, Lou Visco, D-1 and Matt Baker, E-1. Charlie Williams received a $25 Black Wing gift certificate for posting the 100 straight.
At the conclusion of Saturday’s activities, all shooters were asked to gather in front of the “Skeet Shack” for a special presentation. Referee Casey Roshon was recognized for his outstanding performance as a Black Wing referee and staff member during the last 3 years. Not only did Casey work each shoot as a referee but he helped with the set up and tear down of the facilities before and after each shoot. Casey worked without complaint and pulled birds for some of our most demanding shooters without criticism. To a round of applause Casey was given a Lonesome Charlie Shooter’s Pouch with his name engraved on the pouch. My personal thanks for a job well done! Well deserved.
On Sunday, Ron’s Squad (Ron Margello) of new shooters took to the field with Mike Shurig, a new member added to his squad. Ron Margello has mentored this squad of new shooters through all of Black Wing’s registered shoots this shoot year and on the practice field. Black Wing hosted a total of 15 shooters new to registered American skeet this year of which 8 participated in the Break ‘Em All Open. Thanks for your hard work Ron. A special thanks to all the new shooters. There would be no registered skeet shoots without you.
And as fate may play it, our new shooters did quite well off the field. Dick Irene won the 20 Gauge Tournament Skeet Remington 1100 and Lou Visco won the Las Vegas vacation in a random drawing. Lou was overheard as saying Las Vegas in October sounds good.
The 28 GA Event opened Sunday with Bryan Rogers capturing the Championship with a lone 100. Class winners were: Wayne Harvey, AA-1, Ron Margello, A-1, Ted Latham, B-1, Ed Atherton, C-1, and Richard Irene, D-1. Bryan Rogers received a $25 Black Wing gift certificate for posting the 100 straight.
The 20 GA Event closed the shoot with Bryan Rogers capturing the Championship. Class winners were: Mike Harm, AA-1, Jim Rogers, a.k.a. Bryan Rogers’ dad, A-1, Ted Latham, B-1, Ed Atherton, C-1 and Bob Darragh, D-1.
Charlie Williams took the 3 Gun HOA title with a superb 297 following a shoot-off with Bryan Rogers who had to settle for Runner-Up.
A special thank you to Dairy Queen and John Beggs for sponsoring this shoot. Your support and the support of our other sponsors have helped create a growing skeet program at Black Wing. Hats off and thank you very much!
To all the shooters who participated in Black Wing’s 2007 registered program, thank you and we look forward to seeing you next year. Black Wing’s 2008 registered skeet schedule will be posted on the internet at www.blackwingsc.com as soon as it is finalized.
