Black Wing Shooting Center hosts the
sixth annual
3 Docs Mid-Ohio Open
By David Guinn
Delaware, OH – Black Wing Shooting
Center hosted the 6th annual Mid-Ohio Open, June 19 - 21, 2009.
The Mid-Ohio is sponsored by doctors’ Dick Irene, Ted Latham, and Jim
Nappi, doctors’ with a passion for skeet. I cannot stress how
important it is to the skeet community when individuals of this caliber
step up and contribute money to perpetuate the game of skeet.
Many thanks are in order to these great guys.
The 3 Docs provided $1,200 in added money plus $300 to the winners of
the CD(E) shoot-offs for 12 and 28 gauges. Each Open participant
was given a unique 3 Docs Mid-Ohio logo hat pin inscribed with the year
2009 and the opportunity to win additional prizes at Saturday night’s
dinner. Over $250 in prizes, which included a Lonesome Charlie
Shooter’s Pouch, a $75 Black Wing gift certificate, a bag of #9 shot,
plus many more great prizes, were awarded at random at Saturday night’s
dinner. In addition, the Rogers’ family contributed 6 bottles of
Ohio wine with the 3 Docs Mid-Ohio logo and shoot date inscribed on the
label. What a great memento for the shooters who were lucky
enough to win a bottle of this fine Ohio wine.
Despite forecasts of rain and thunderstorms, 30 shooters took to the
field this Father’s Day weekend with just one thing in mind; have a
great time and, of course, try to hit some clays. As usual the
weather man was wrong, and the weather was dry and hot all weekend
long.
Get out the brooms; Bryan Rogers swept this year’s Mid-Ohio with the
exception of the 20 gauge event which was taken by Rick Smelko.
Also, Rick Smelko was RU in HOA, 377, and Jack Grehan took RU in HAA,
469. The weekend belonged to Bryan Rogers, HOA champion, 392, and
HAA champion, 489
The Doubles Event opened the Mid-Ohio on Friday with 14 shooters.
Bryan Rogers claimed the Championship with a 97. Class winners
were: B1, Jack Grehan, C1, Paul Kautz, and D1, Bob Hill.
Saturday activities kicked off with the 12 Gauge Event with 26
shooters. Bryan Rogers shot the lone 100 to claim this
championship. Class winners were: AA1, Mike Albanese, B1,
Jack Grehan, C1, Henry Smith III, D1, Steve Seggebruch, and E1, Dick
Irene.
The 20 Gauge Event with 23 shooters closed Saturday’s competition with
Rick Smelko crowned champion with a 98. Class winners were: AA1,
Larry Bolino, A1, Jim Rogers, B1, Ed Brooks, C1, Steve Seggebruch, and
D1, Jim Nappi.
Finally, the moment arrived for the first CD(E) Event. New to the
Mid-Ohio, the 12 Gauge CD(E) Event attracted 16 brave shooters who
preformed in front of a very enthusiastic group of shooters, friends,
and family members. This CD(E) Event handicapped the shooters by
class and was doubles at 3, 4 and 5. Ted Latham managed the
competition with the assistance of Bryan Rogers. One by one the
shooters were eliminated. Dick Irene claimed the top spot and was
awarded $75. Dick was followed by Quinten Smith, $50, and Bill
Lloyd, $25. What makes it great is Quinten is a first time
registered Sub-Junior shooter. Congratulations Quinten.
Even with the CD(E) Event, the star attraction was Saturday’s dinner of
burgers and Brats. Food, talk and awards flowed freely during the
dinner. A special thanks to the 3 Docs for providing the dinner
and especially to Judy Stadtlander, our gracious Black Wing hostess,
for preparing and hosting the dinner with Suzanne Gore and Judy
Wilson’s help. Judy, it was a lot of work but appreciated by a
hungry group of shooters. The leftovers were devoured by the
shooters on Sunday.
The 28 Gauge Event with 23 shooters opened Sunday’s activities with
Bryan Rogers taking the championship in a shoot off with Dave Guinn
after each posted a 98. Dave Guinn settled for B1 and other class
winners were: AA1, Rick Smelko, A1, Larry Bolino, C1, Steve
Seggebruch, and D1, Dick Irene
The 410 Event with 19 shooters closed the shoot with Bryan Rogers
claiming yet another championship by besting his father, Jim Rogers, in
a shoot-off of 97s. Class winners were: A1, Jim Rogers, B1,
Jack Grehan, C1, Paul Kautz, and D1, Jim Nappi.
Class winners in the HOA competition were: A1, Jim Rogers, B1, Jack
Grehan, and C1, Steve Seggebruch. Class winners in the HAA
competition were: B1, Ted Latham, and C1, Paul Kautz.
The 28 Gauge CD Event closed the door on this year’s Mid-Ohio.
Six shooters participated with Ed Brooks claming $75 followed closely
by Dick Irene, $50, and Vicki Rogers, $25. Seeing all the
shooters participate in both the 12 Gauge and 28 Gauge CD(E) Events
added a very special feeling to this year’s Mid-Ohio.
Congratulations to our 3 Docs, Dick Irene, Jim Nappi, and Ted Latham
for sponsoring the Mid-Ohio and as Ted said at Saturday’s dinner,
‘Thank you to the shooters for participating and making the Mid-Ohio a
success.’
